A Canadian NHL team has not won the Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens did so in 1993. The Edmonton Oilers had a chance to break the losing streak on Monday, as they clawed their way to the finals after being down 3-0 in the series, but came up short, losing 2-1 in Game 7 to the Florida Panthers.
This loss adds to the list of seven Canadian teams that have made it to the Finals but have lost since 1993.
7 Canadian NHL teams that lost a Stanley Cup Final since 1993
1: Edmonton Oilers, 2024
The most recent Canadian team to lose the Stanley Cup Final is the 2024 Edmonton Oilers, that fell in Game 7 to the Florida Panthers. After their loss, Canada's title drought has now gone on for more than three decades.
2: Montreal Canadiens, 2021
The Montreal Canadiens had a surprise run to the Final in 2021. They beat Toronto in seven games, swept the Winnipeg Jets and beat the Vegas Golden Knights in six games. But the Canadiens ran into the defending champions Tampa Bay Lightning, who won the Stanley Cup in 2020.
The Lightning defeated the Canadiens in five games to win it again in 2021.
3: Vancouver Canucks, 2011
The Vancouver Canucks looked confident to bring the Stanley Cup back to Canada in 2011.
Vancouver took a 2-0 series lead and was up 3-2, but the Canucks couldn't close it against the Boston Bruins, losing Game 7 at home 4-0.
4: Ottawa Senators, 2007
The Ottawa Senators made it to the Final in 2007 but lost in five games to the Anaheim Ducks.
Ottawa was a fourth seed who defeated Pittsburgh, New Jersey and Buffalo in five games each but couldn't keep up with the Ducks as they lost the first two games and couldn't dig themselves out of the hole.
5: Edmonton Oilers, 2006
The 2006 Edmonton Oilers nearly had an epic comeback like the 2024 Oilers did in the Stanley Cup Final.
Down 3-1 after four games, they won Game 5 in OT and dominated Game 6 with a 4-0 win. But in Game 7, the Carolina Hurricanes won 3-1.
6: Calgary Flames, 2004
Calgary Flames faced the Tampa Bay Lightning and took a 3-2 series lead after winning Game 5 in overtime. But Tampa Bay won Game 6 in double overtime and Game 7 by a score of 2-1 to win the Cup.
7: Vancouver Canucks, 1994
The Vancouver Canucks had a chance for a Canadian team to win back-to-back Stanley Cups. However, they lost 3-2 in Game 7 of the 1994 Final to the New York Rangers.
Kirk McLean, the legendary netminder for the Ducks, stopped 52 of 54 shots in the first game of the series. However, the Canucks lost by a single goal in Game 7, and the Rangers won the title in what was only the 10th Game 7 in league history.
