Remember when the Philadelphia Flyers lost 10 games in a row (0-5-5) at one point during the season and calling for head coach Dave Hakstol's job, well ever since that point the Flyers are 14-5-1. Philadelphia currently sits in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division with a 22-16-8 record and 52 points. They are currently one point back of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
There is a reason why hockey is a long season and grind. Philadelphia plays in the toughest division in the NHL. The Flyers have only scored 135 goals so far this season and they have given up 133 goals so far this season. That isn't very good overall, but Philadelphia has scored 58 goals in that span and given up 41 in that span.
Claude Giroux leads the Flyers with 55 points (14 goals and 41 assists). Jakub Voracek has scored only eight goals this season, but he has recorded 45 assists so far this season. Sean Couturier has scored 26 goals and recorded 20 assists so far this season.
Shayne Gostibehere has scored nine goals and recorded 24 assists so far this season. Ivan Provorov has scored nine goals and recorded 14 assists so far this season. Wayne Simmonds has scored 16 goals and recorded 13 assists.
Other than that, the Flyers don't have much scoring depth and 15 players have combined for 53 goals. That includes second overall pick Nolan Patrick who has only played in 37 games this season and he has only scored three goals and recorded six assists. Patrick has missed some games this season because of injury, but if he ever goes on a hot streak, that will be a very good thing for the Flyers.
Philadelphia has a bunch of good young defenseman in Robert Hagg, Travis Sanheim, Shayne Gostibehere, and Ivan Provorov. The goaltending has been average for the Flyers, but it will be the difference whether or not the Flyers can make it to the postseason. Brian Elliott's record is 17-11-7 with a .906 save percentage and a 2.84 GAA. Michal Neuvirth's record is 5-5-1 with a .928 save percentage and a 2.23 GAA, along with one shutout. Anthony Stolarz is usually the third goalie, but because of his preseason meniscus surgery, Alex Lyon is the third goalie.
It seems like the Flyers are playing a lot better as of late and they have 18 more divisional games this season. They are currently 4-2-4 in divisional games this season. Winning division games down the stretch will be the difference whether or not the Flyers make it to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons under Dave Hakstol.
