The Arizona Coyotes were a professional ice hockey team based in the Phoenix metropolitan area, competing in the NHL. Originally founded as the Winnipeg Jets in 1972, the team joined the NHL in 1979. The team struggled financially which led to their relocation to Phoenix in 1996, where they became the Phoenix Coyotes, later they shifted to Arizona and became Arizona Coyotes in 2014. Despite passionate fans and notable players, the team struggled with financial stability and venue issues. They played in various arenas. Recently the Coyotes' tenure with Mullett Arena in Tempe ended in 2024.
After the arena proposal in Tempe failed, the Coyotes stopped operations. Their players and staff were moved to Salt Lake City to form the Utah Hockey Club. The Coyotes might return to the NHL if they can build a new arena in Arizona by 2029.
Arizona Coyotes draft history
The Arizona Coyotes have had notable success in the NHL draft, bringing in players who have left significant marks on the team. One of their most famous draft picks is Blake Wheeler, selected fifth overall in the 2004 NHL Draft. This pick shocked many because Wheeler was ranked much lower on scouting lists.
Although Wheeler never played for the Coyotes due to management issues and organizational turmoil, he went on to have a successful career with other teams. Wheeler’s career highlights include becoming the captain of the Winnipeg Jets and contributing the most points by any Coyotes draft pick.
Another key draft pick of the Coyotes is Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who was chosen sixth overall in the 2009 NHL Draft. Ekman-Larsson quickly became the strength of the team. He holds several franchise records for a defenseman, including goals, assists, and points.
Keith Yandle, a fourth-round pick in 2005, also stands out as one of the best draft picks of the Coyotes. Yandle was a key defenseman for Arizona, leading the team in points for consecutive seasons. Yandle’s trade to the New York Rangers marked the end of an era for the Coyotes.
Daniel Briere was picked 24th overall by the Coyotes in the 1996 NHL Draft. Sadly, the Coyotes traded him before he showed his full potential. His success with other teams later on showed that the Coyotes made a good choice by drafting him, even though they didn't enjoy his best years.
