The Pittsburgh Penguins had a tough 6-3 loss against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday as the Jets remain the only undefeated team left in the NHL this season.
NHL fans voiced their opinions about the matchup. Here’s a look at comments poking fun at the Pens’ loss on Sunday:
“Penguins are washed,” a fan chimed in.
“Gonna have so much fun watching the penguins finish bottom 5 team this year,” another fan weighed in.
“Pens were too slow so…” a fan commented.
However, not all fans poked fun at Pittsburgh. Some fans believed the Jets would eventually lose to other teams. Here’s what these fans had in mind:
“Blues hand them their first loss,” this fan posted on social media.
“Let the Caps play them,” another fan Tweeted.
“Jets vs Flames conference final gonna go hard,” a fan posted on social media.
The undefeated Jets will play the St. Louis Blues in their next game on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Penguins will face the Calgary Flames as part of their Western Conference road trip.
Pittsburgh Penguins need to play smarter
A post-game recap on NHL.com explored the Pittsburgh Penguins’ loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. The recap pointed out the lineup changes made following the Pens’ loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. While the changes allowed the Pens to get an early jump, they were not enough to overcome the Jets.
NHL.com quoted Pens captain Sidney Crosby following Sunday’s loss:
“The effort we had today was the way we should play every night,” Crosby added, “We just got to find a way to be a bit smarter. But yeah, we were definitely competing a lot more and got rewarded because of it. We’ve got to find a way to bring that every night.”
Playing smarter involves making better decisions in the offensive zone, minimizing costly turnovers and high-danger chances.
Crosby added:
"I thought we did some good things. Obviously, we're giving too much up.”
The comments sum up Pittsburgh’s season thus far. The team has shown great moments but has been unable to maintain the momentum needed to earn wins over a full 60 minutes.
While it’s still early in the season, the Pens are running out of time to make adjustments. A slow start could ultimately jeopardize Pittsburgh’s chances to make the playoffs in a stacked Metro Division.
The Pens will hope to get back on track against a surprising upstart Calgary Flames team.
