Hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Orr has been receiving birthday wishes from the NHL community and his well-wishers across the world as he turns 75 today.
Bobby Orr is widely considered one of the greatest NHL players of all time. He spent a total of 12 seasons in the league and donned the jerseys of the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks.
He used to play as a defenseman and was known for his speed and playmaking skills that revolutionized the role of the defenseman in the league. Orr holds the record for winning the Norris Trophy eight times in a row.
On the occasion of his birthday, let's recall the top three moments of Bobby Orr that made him one of the best NHL players to ever skate on the ice.
#1 Bobby Orr ends Boston Bruins' 29-year Stanley Cup drought
The Boston Bruins have not lifted the Stanley Cup since 1941. During the 1970 Stanley Cup finals against the St. Louis Blues, they entered the finals for the first time since 1958.
The Bruins were already 3-0 up in the series, with the fourth game of the finals being played at the TD Garden Arena. The game reached overtime and Bobby Orr received an assist from his teammate Derek Sanderson.
He scored a goal against the Blues' legendary goalie Glen Hall in 40 seconds of OT to win the Cup for the Bruins. Bobby's airborne celebration after the goal is still one of the greatest pictures in the hockey world.
#2 1972 Stanley Cup finals MVP
After clinching the 1970 Stanley Cup crown, the Boston Bruins reached the championship finals in 1972. They won the 1972 Cup after defeating the New York Rangers 4-2 in the series.
During the sixth game of the series, Bobby again scored the winner for the Bruins, lifted his second Stanley Cup with the team and was named the MVP of the finals. He was also honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy.
#3 The only defenseman to score the most points in a single season
Bobby Orr is the only defenseman in NHL history to record the most points in a season with 139 points. He achieved this feat during the 1970-71 season. During that season, Bobby appeared in 78 games picked up 37 goals and 102 assists, and won his second Norris Trophy in a row.
Interestingly, he came close to breaking his record during the 1974-75 season, when he posted 135 points on the season. His 139 points record is still unreached and seems likely to remain with Bobby for a long time.
