The Buffalo Sabres, based in Buffalo, New York, are an American professional ice hockey team that competes in the NHL's Eastern Conference. Established in 1970 as an expansion team, the Sabres quickly made their mark, reaching the postseason for the first time in 1973 with the help of the famed "French Connection" line—Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin, and René Robert. This trio led the team to a division championship in 1975 and a Stanley Cup finals appearance where they lost to the Philadelphia Flyers.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Buffalo Sabres showed potential, winning several division titles and making playoff appearances. The team’s fortunes changed in the early 1990s with the addition of goaltender Dominik Hašek. Under coach Lindy Ruff, the Sabres reached the conference finals in 1997 and 1999, losing the latter in a controversial final against the Dallas Stars. The team had playoff success in the mid-2000s, led by goaltender Ryan Miller, and won the Presidents' Trophy in 2007. However, a playoff drought began in 2013.
