The Buffalo Sabres could be playoff-bound in 2023 for the first time in a long time. After years of rebuilding, restocking, dumping off and reloading, it may finally be the Sabres time to play playoff hockey.

The Sabres currently sit four points out of the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference with one team in front of them. With the window just now opening, and expectations at rock bottom, the Sabres could still find a way to be playing in the big dance.

Here are three reasons why the Buffalo Sabres could be playing in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2023.

#1. Dylan Cozens and Tage Thompson

Dylan Cozens and Tage Thompson are two young forwards who have the potential to be game-changers for the Buffalo Sabres in 2023. Cozens, a 22-year-old center, showed flashes of his potential this season with 54 points in 61 games, and he is poised for a breakout final stretch of the season.

Thompson, a 26-year-old winger, has 83 points in 62 games and has the size and skill to be a game-breaking player. If the two can continue to not only develop and contribute at a high level, but also be the team leaders the Sabres have sought, they could be big on the Sabres' playoff push.

#2. Talented Goaltending

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is a young goaltender who showed flashes of brilliance in NHL action this season, and he could be a key factor in the Buffalo Sabres' playoff push in 2023, further cementing his spot as a top tier goaltender. The 23-year-old Finnish netminder has an impressive track record in international play, and he has shown the potential to be a top-tier goalie in the NHL.

If Luukkonen can continue to develop and build on his craft, he could be a game-changer for the Buffalo Sabres. Goaltending is a critical position in the NHL, and if Luukkonen can continue to provide the Sabres with consistent and reliable play between the pipes, it could be the difference-maker that propels them to the playoffs in 2023.

#3. New grit

Alex Tuch and Jordan Greenway are two power forwards who bring a gritty and physical element to their game, and their toughness will be vital to the Buffalo Sabres' playoff push.

Tuch, a 26-year-old winger, has a rare combination of size, speed, and skill, and he is not afraid to use his physicality to create space and win battles along the boards.

Greenway, a 26-year-old winger, is similarly imposing with his size and strength, and he brings a relentless work ethic and physicality to his game.

If Tuch and Greenway can continue to be difference-makers with their physical play and tenacity, they could help the Buffalo Sabres establish a hard-nosed identity and become a difficult team to play against.
