Originating as the New England Whalers in 1971 with the World Hockey Association (WHA), they transitioned to the National Hockey League (NHL) after the NHL-WHA merger in 1979. The team later became the Hartford Whalers before relocating to North Carolina in 1997 and then changed its name to Carolina Hurricanes. Since then, they have claimed six Division titles, two Conference Championships and a sole Stanley Cup. Notably, their Stanley Cup victory marked North Carolina's first only and major professional sports championship till date. Notably, their iteration as the Hartford Whalers saw them claim four Division titles, alongside two conference championships and a Avco World Trophy in 1973.
As of now, the Hurricanes play their home games at PNC Arena and compete as the members of the Metropolitan Division under the Eastern Conference. Moreover, their day-to-day operations are taken care by owner Tom Dundon, general manager Eric Tulsky, and head coach Rod Brind'Amour.

Svechnikov was later drafted second overall in 2018, quickly became a top-line forward of the team.
