The Carolina Hurricanes are an American professional ice hockey team based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Notably, they were established in 1972 as the New England Whalers in Hartford, Connecticut and used to compete in the World Hockey Association (WHA) before its merger with the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979. However, this change led them to be known as the Hartford Whalers. During this iteration of the team, the team was largely unsuccessful as they made the Stanley Cup playoffs only eight times and won a single playoff series. In an interesting turn of events, they relocated to Raleigh in 1997, where they became the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes found success quickly, winning their first division title in 2000 and reaching the Stanley Cup finals in 2002. Furthermore, in 2006, they secured their first and only Stanley Cup with a dramatic victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Furthermore, they won three consecutive division titles between 2021 to 2023.
