New York Rangers v Carolina Hurricanes - Game Six
Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes are an NHL team based in Raleigh, North Carolina, playing in the Eastern Conference. Founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers in the WHA, they joined the NHL in 1979. After relocating from Hartford to Raleigh in 1997, they won their first and only Stanley Cup in 2006.

Initially, the Hurricanes played their home games in Greensboro while awaiting the completion of their permanent arena in Raleigh. The team struggled in its early North Carolina years but rebounded by winning a division title in 1998–99. In 2001–02, they reached the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time, though they lost to the Detroit Red Wings. The Hurricanes reached their peak in the 2005–06 season, when they secured the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Cup, defeating the Edmonton Oilers in a thrilling seven-game series. The Hurricanes returned to the conference finals in 2009 but then endured a nine-year playoff drought. In 2018, former captain Rod Brind’Amour was named head coach, guiding the team to a resurgence. Under his leadership, the Hurricanes advanced to the conference finals in 2019 and made deep playoff runs, but they have yet to replicate their 2006 Stanley Cup success.
