On October 9, 2020, Tanev departed from the Canucks as a free agent following ten seasons and inked a four-year, $18 million deal with the Calgary Flames, a fellow Western Canadian team. However, on February 28, 2024, he was traded to the Dallas Stars after a three-team trade deal involving the New Jersey Devils.
