The New York Rangers got back on track winning a 6-2 decision over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night at the United Center. Filip Chytil scored twice for the New York Rangers, with Jonny Brodzinski, Will Borgen, Reilly Smith, and Vincent Trocheck getting the other goals for the Rangers.
Meanwhile, Tyler Bertuzzi opened the scoring for the Blackhawks with Wyatt Kaiser getting the other goal for Chicago.
Louis Domingue got his first start since November 2023, backstopping the Blue Shirts to a win.
So, here’s a look at the three key reasons why the New York Rangers won on Sunday night against the Chicago Blackhawks.
3 reasons why New York Rangers won over Chicago Blackhawks
#3 Domingue was huge for the Rangers
Louis Domingue got his first NHL start since November 2023 on Sunday. With Igor Shesterkin out injured and Jonathan Quick playing on Saturday night against the Washington Capitals, the club called on Domingue, who didn’t disappoint.
Domingue made 25 saves in the winning effort. Most importantly, the win is a huge one as it helps the Blue Shirts, and Domingue, build confidence moving forward.
#2 Depth scoring was crucial
With top scorers Artemi Panarin, Alexis Lafreniere, and Mika Zibanejad registering an assist apiece, it was the depth scoring that lifted the Rangers. Reilly Smith, Jonny Brodzinski, and a blue-line goal from Will Borgen were all crucial in the New York Rangers’ five unanswered goals in the game.
That sort of scoring performance is key for the Rangers, particularly with the top six failing to carry the load, with the exception of Vincent Trocheck scoring. Getting depth production can make a significant difference between winning and losing games.
#1 Chytil scores twice
Speaking of depth scoring, Filip Chytil continues to be an unsung hero for the New York Rangers. Chytil notched two goals on Sunday night, giving him 10 on the season. Chytil has been a solid presence in the Rangers’ middle six, proving he deserves a shot at playing in the top six.
For the Rangers, getting production from other parts of the lineup is highly important as the top six have struggled to score recently. That is why Chytil’s two goals earned him the game’s first star on Sunday night.
The New York Rangers will be off on Monday before taking on the Dallas Stars on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in a big test, as the Blue Shirts look to climb out of last place in the Metro Division.
