The Colorado Avalanche is an NHL team based in Denver. They play in the Central Division of the Western Conference and host home games at Ball Arena, which they share with the NBA's Denver Nuggets and the NLL's Colorado Mammoth. The team was originally founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques and joined the NHL in 1979 after the WHA–NHL merger. They moved to Denver after the 1994–95 season.
In their first season in Denver, the Avalanche won the Pacific Division and swept the Florida Panthers in the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals.
