The Detroit Red Wings lost a tough game against the Boston Bruins, 3-2 in overtime at TD Garden on Tuesday night. Pavel Zacha scored the controversial game-winner at 2:15 in overtime to give the Bruins the extra point.

Lucas Raymond had two goals for the Detroit Red Wings in the losing effort. Nikita Zadorov and Justin Brazeau added the others for the Bruins.

Here’s a closer look at three reasons why Detroit lost to Boston on Tuesday night.

3 reasons why Detroit Red Wings lost 3-2 in OT to Boston Bruins

#3. Red Wings were outmuscled by Bruins

The Red Wings had a tough time handling the Bruins’ tight-checking, physical playing style on Tuesday night. Boston outhit Detroit 40-14 on the night. The Bruins’ physical edge allowed the team to keep the game close and eventually turn things around to get the controversial win in overtime.

The Bruins’ playing style was disruptive enough to prevent the Red Wings from playing their high-flying, puck-possession game. While the Wings generated several scoring opportunities, they weren’t enough to put the game away for good.

#2. PP goal was waved off

The first controversial play of the game occurred at 7:19 of the second period when the Red Wings scored a power play goal to make the game 3-1. Marco Kasper beat Joonas Korpisalo on a redirection.

However, the Bruins challenged the call, showing the play was offside as Erik Gustaffson entered a step before the puck entered the Bruins’ zone. The goal was waved and the game remained 2-1 in favor of the Wings at the time.

Boston would eventually tie the game before winning it on another controversial call.

#1. Controversial no-call in overtime

Pavel Zacha’s game-winner started with a no-call on the Red Wings’ Alex DeBrincat, who played the puck behind his net as he was chased by David Pastrnak. During the play, Pastrnak appeared to get his stick caught between DeBrincat’s legs, taking him down to the ice. However, the referees did not call a penalty.

Given the no-call, Zacha was able to retrieve the loose puck and bury it past Ville Husso for the game-winner. The goal stood on the ice as the Bruins celebrated the win. Meanwhile, the Red Wings argued the no-call to no avail.

Detroit will lick its wounds as it prepares to face the Ottawa Senators next on Thursday night.
