Rod Brind'Amour and the Carolina Hurricanes were eliminated in six games by the New York Rangers in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Hurricanes got down 3-0 in the series but won two straight games and led 3-1 after the second period in Game 6.
However, Carolina blew the lead to lose 5-3 and now the future of head coach Rod Brind'Amour is in doubt. A deal was reportedly getting close, but the team pulled the offer, according to TSN insider Darren Dreger.
Although Brind'Amour is one of the top coaches in the NHL, it does appear his future with the Hurricanes is in doubt. He will be highly sought after by several NHL teams with current job openings.
Brind'Amour hasn't been able to get the Hurricanes over the hump as the team has faltered in the playoffs, so the team may decide to go in a different direction.
GM says Rod Brind'Amour wants to be a Hurricane for life
During the 2023-24 NHL season, Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell said Rod Brind'Amour wants to be a Hurricane for life.
“Rod wants to be a Hurricane for life,” president and general manager Don Waddell said.
Brind'Amour played for the Hurricanes in his playing career and helped them win a Stanley Cup in 2006.
However, as the head coach, he hasn't been able to replicate the success, but following the Game 6 loss, Brind'Amour was still pleased with his team.
"We played the best team in the league. So ... Looking back on those first three games where we lost by a goal in overtime, there's a play here or there and everything's different and we just didn't find it.
"Even tonight, another goal puts the game away and it's a different story. We had our opportunities and there were a couple of posts in there. I don't look at it like that. That's the way it's going to be written, but I don't look at it like that at all," Brind'Amour said after Game 6, via The Hockey News.
Rod Brind'Amour is 278-130-44 all-time as the head coach of the Hurricanes.
