The Detroit Red Wings dropped a close 2-1 decision at the hands of the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center. Rasmus Ristolainen scored his second of the season at 4:34 of the extra frame to give the Flyers a crucial win.
Joel Farabee opened the scoring for the Flyers at 5:21 of the second period with his seventh goal of the year. Meanwhile, Ben Chiarot also got his second of the season, tying the game at one 30 seconds into the third period.
Here’s a closer look at three reasons why Detroit lost in overtime to Philadelphia.
3 reasons why Detroit Red Wings lost 2-1 in OT to Philadelphia Flyers
#3. Red Wings lost an even game
Detroit was on the wrong end of an evenly matched game. The shot count was 28-26 in Detroit’s favor.
The Red Wings got the game’s lone power play opportunity, failing to convert on it. Additionally, the face-offs were exactly even 50/50, with the hits 15-13 in Philly’s favor.
All told it was anybody’s game, with the Flyers able to skate away with the extra point on the night.
#2. DeBrincat, Kane shut down
The Red Wings' scoring has dried up after having a successful run following Todd McLellan’s hiring in late December.
Over the last few games, Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane have struggled to find the back of the next. On Tuesday night, both players had quiet nights.
DeBrincat was a minus-2 in over 15 minutes of ice time. He was on the ice for 21 shifts, notching three shots on goal. He now has one assist in his last five games.
As for Kane, He was a minus-1 in nearly 16 minutes of ice. Kane was on the ice for 19 shifts getting just one shot on goal. Kane has cooled off, registering one goal and two assists in his last five games after going on a tear in the five games before that.
#1. Costly defensive miscues
Both Flyers’ goals came on costly defensive miscues, leaving goaltender Alex Lyon out to dry. While Lyong played well, making 24 of 26 saves, his defense failed to pick him up on both goals.
In Farabee’s goal, the sequence began with a turnover in the Detroit zone. Instead of exiting the zone, the puck came back inside the Red Wings’ zone, with Farabee making a nifty move to get past a diving Moritz Seider. Seider was unable to make a play, allowing Farabee to lift a backhander past Lyon.
However, the overtime winner was a significant blunder. The Flyers had a 2-on-1, which Lyon initially stopped. However, the rebound came back out in front of the net, with none of the Red Wings’ players able to cover the Flyers standing in front of the net.
The puck sat on the doorstep, allowing Ristolainen to end the game.
Here’s a look at the goal:
The goal could have been avoided had at least one of the Detroit players been able to get the puck back. They didn’t and the Flyers took the two points.
The Detroit Red Wings will be back in action when they take on the Montreal Canadiens next at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday.
