The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit, competing in the NHL’s Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. Founded in 1926 as the Detroit Cougars, the team was rechristened as the Detroit Falcons in 1930 before becoming the Red Wings in 1932. Before joining the Red Wings, Lalonde served as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he won two Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. He became the head coach of the Red Wings for the 2022–23 season.

Lalonde's coaching journey began at the collegiate level, where he served as an assistant coach at various schools, including North Adams State College and Ferris State University. He also worked with the University of Denver, where he was an assistant coach for several years. Lalonde transitioned to junior hockey, becoming the general manager and head coach of the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL. Lalonde was named USHL Coach of the Year in 2012. He moved on to coach the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL and later the Iowa Wild in the AHL.

In 2018, Lalonde joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as an assistant coach, culminating in two Stanley Cup championships. His success with Tampa Bay helped him earn the head coaching position with the Red Wings.
