Founded in 1926, they were initially known as the Detroit Cougars and changed its name to the Red Wings in 1932. The Red Wings are one of the Original Six teams and have a rich history in the league.

With 11 Stanley Cup championships, the Red Wings hold the record for the most titles among NHL franchises based in the United States and rank third overall behind the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. The team played at Joe Louis Arena from 1979 to 2017 before moving to Little Caesars Arena.
