2022 NHL All-Star - Portraits
Dylan Larkin

Dylan Larkin is the captain of the Detroit Red Wings. The 27-year-old center is already one of the most productive players on the Detroit Red Wings. Dylan Larkin began his playing career in his hometown of Waterford, Michigan. He played for the youth teams of the Detroit Belle Tire before making his junior debut for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the 2012-13 season.

The Detroit Red Wings selected Larkin with the 15th pick overall in the first round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2015-16 season, becoming the first 19-year-old to debut on opening night since Mike Sillinger in 1990–91. Larkin scored 23 goals and 22 assists in his rookie season and he was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for November 2015.

In the 2016-17 season, Dylan scored 17 goals and 15 assists playing both winger and center. In the 2018-19 season, he scored 32 goals and 41 assists in 76 games. Dylan has continued to be one of the Red Wings' top players in recent seasons. He has also been named to the NHL All-Star Team three times. In the 2022-23 season, Dylan scored 35 goals and 47 assists, finishing second on the Red Wings in scoring.

Why is Dylan Larkin 71?

Dylan Larkin chose the number #71 to wear for the Detroit Red Wings because it was one of the few numbers available to him when he joined the team. The numbers 1, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 19 were retired. He had previously worn the number 19 at Michigan, but that number was retired by the Red Wings.

Dylan initially opted for jersey number #91 when he joined the Red Wings in 2015, but the new forward Brad Richards, who also joined the team in 2015, chose the same jersey number.

However, both of them couldn’t pick the jersey number #91, which was worn by Sergei Fedorov. It was the 8th number officially retired by the Red Wings; therefore, Brad Richards had to choose jersey number #17.

In the end, Dylan chose #71 and stated that he liked having a 9 in his jersey number but was also trying to change things up. He has also said that he expects to keep his number the same in the future.
