The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta which competes in the National Hockey League (NHL) as part of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference. They call Rogers Place their home arena and are headed to the 2024 Stanley Cup finals.
Founded in 1971, the Edmonton Oilers initially played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) as the Alberta Oilers before becoming the Edmonton Oilers a year later. Knoblauch has led the team to the Stanley Cup finals in his very first season as full-time head coach. They also oversaw a 16-game winning streak and finished second in the Pacific Division. En route to the finals, they defeated the Los Angeles Kings in the first round, the Vancouver Canucks in the second round and lastly the Dallas Stars before confirming their date with destiny.
Knoblauch originally hails from Imperial, Saskatchewan, and was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft but never played with them in the NHL. However, he still played for four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and later spent five seasons with the University of Alberta Golden Bears, where he won a National Championship in 1999-00. He also played professionally with the Austin Ice Bats and in France with Bisons de Neuilly-sur-Marne.
