The Edmonton Oilers made two trades on Sunday to help clear cap space that allows them to match the offer sheets for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. The Oilers dealt Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks and then acquired Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks.
The Oilers are over the salary cap by $1,354,167, according to Spotrac, but NHL teams are allowed to go over the salary cap in the offseason. If Edmonton matches the offer sheets to Broberg and Holloway, PuckPedia has the Oilers at $5.925 million over the salary cap.
Although Edmonton would be over the salary cap, the Oilers could put Evander Kane on LTIR, which takes his entire $5.1 million salary off the books for as long as he is injured. To then get under the salary cap, Edmonton could send recently acquired defenseman Ty Emberson to the AHL, which would get his $950k salary off the books and allow Edmonton to be under the cap.
By trading Ceci and putting Kane on LTIR, Edmonton can now match the offers to Broberg and Holloway and still be under the salary cap. But it's still uncertain if the team will match either player's offer sheet.
Oilers' Evander Kane set for surgery
Evander Kane dealt with a hip injury during the Stanley Cup Finals, and according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Kane is set to undergo surgery.
Not only will Kane go under the knife for his hernia injury, but Friedman said the forward will be out for multiple months. Friedman said on the "32 Thoughts: The Podcast:"
"I believe Evander Kane is going to have surgery. I think that one of the reasons it has taken until this long was because I think there was some conversations about who was going to do it, which doctor, and I think they had to work that out.
"And I think secondly, I also believe that sometimes in the summer, doctors schedules, they take vacations like everyone else, and I think that also kind of affected it."
Friedman added:
"They had to decide who was going to do it, and when was this doctor available. I believe that decision has been made, eventually, he will have the surgery, and he’s going to be out months. I’m not talking one or two months, I’m thinking it’s going to be longer than that."
Kane skated in 77 games last season, recording 24 goals and 20 assists for 44 points. In the playoffs, he played in 20 games, recording four goals and four assists for eight points.
