Raised in Bellmawr, New Jersey, Robinson played prep hockey at Gloucester Catholic High School, graduating in 2013. He was later selected by the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the 2013 USHL Entry Draft and spent the 2013-14 season in the United States Hockey League (USHL). Robinson went on to play collegiate hockey at Princeton University, where his role and performance improved each season. As team captain in his senior year, he recorded a career-high 17 goals and 31 points, leading Princeton to win the ECAC playoff championship and secure a spot in the NCAA tournament.

Undrafted in the NHL, Robinson signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets in March 2018. He achieved milestones, such as scoring his first NHL goal in 2019 and recording his first career hat trick in 2023. In July 2024, Robinson joined the Carolina Hurricanes on a one-year deal.
