Staal's NHL career began during the 2003-04 season and was invited to participate in the Young Stars game at the 2004 NHL All-Star Game. In 2020, he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres, followed by a trade to the Montreal Canadiens in 2021. He joined the Florida Panthers in July 2022 and signed a one-year contract with them.
