Eric Staal is a former professional ice hockey player, having played for various teams and achieved numerous accolades, including winning the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes. Staal's NHL career began during the 2003-04 season and was invited to participate in the Young Stars game at the 2004 NHL All-Star Game. On June 19, 2006, he hoisted the Stanley Cup after defeating the Edmonton Oilers in the deciding game 7 of the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals.

Staal was appointed captain of the Hurricanes on January 20, 2010, becoming the fifth captain of the team since their relocation from Hartford to North Carolina. He was chosen as one of the captains for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game, hosted in Raleigh, North Carolina. However, his time with the Hurricanes came to an end on February 28, 2016, when he was traded to the New York Rangers, where he united with his brother Marc. After a short stint with the Rangers, Staal signed a three-year contract with the Minnesota Wild as a free agent on July 1, 2016. In 2020, he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres, followed by a trade to the Montreal Canadiens in 2021. He joined the Florida Panthers in July 2022 and signed a one-year contract with them.
