Erik Karlsson was born on May 31, 1990. He is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL as of 2024. Drafted 15th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, he spent nine successful seasons with the team before joining the San Jose Sharks.

A three-time James Norris Memorial Trophy winner, Karlsson was recognized as the NHL's best defenceman in 2012, 2015, and 2023. Karlson has also made his name internationally, earning awards such as the IIHF World Championship All-Star team selection in 2024 and Best Defenceman awards at both the World Junior Championships and the Olympics.

Has Erik Karlsson won a Stanley Cup?

Erik Karlsson is yet to add the Stanley Cup to his resume. He is one of the most successful defensemen without the championship trophy. However, he is a three-time winner of the James Norris Award, given to the best defenseman in the league. Karlsson came close to winning the Stanley Cup during his time with the Ottawa Senators in 2017 when the team advanced to the Conference Finals. However, they could not lift the trophy.

Erik Karlsson has received several awards throughout his NHL career. He was selected as an NHL All-Star in 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2023. He won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the league's best defenceman in 2012, 2015, and 2023. Additionally, Karlsson was named to the NHL First All-Star Team in 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2023. Recognized for his exceptional performance over the decade, he was also included in the NHL All-Decade Second Team for 2010–2019. He received the Viking Award in 2012, 2016, and 2017.

Karlsson achieved a historic milestone in the 2022-23 season by scoring 100 points (25 goals, 76 assists), becoming the first defenceman to reach this mark since Brian Leetch in 1992. He was also a finalist for the Norris Trophy for the fifth time and won the award in June 2023. He played his 1,000th NHL game on April 13, 2024, a significant milestone in his career.
