The Florida Panthers secured a 3-2 win in quadruple overtime on Thursday night when left winger Matthew Tkachuk scored with just 12.7 seconds remaining, bringing an end to the marathon contest.
In a thrilling matchup, the Florida Panthers emerged victorious over Carolina Hurricanes in the sixth-longest game in NHL postseason history.
Both goaltenders had outstanding performances. Carolina's Frederik Andersen faced a barrage of shots, making an impressive 57 saves on 60 shots. Meanwhile, Florida's Sergei Bobrovsky turned away 63 of the 65 shots directed at him.
Seth Jarvis scored the only goal in the first period in the last 12 seconds during the Hurricanes' powerplay.
Alexander Barkov and Carter Verhaeghe each socred, giving Panthers a one-goal lead at the end of the second period.
Stefan Noesen scored a goal in the powerplay in the opening minutes of the third period.
Then, after three scoreless OTs, Matthew Tkachuk scored the game-winner with 12 seconds left on the clock and secured a Game 1 victory for the Florida Panthers.
Game 1 took a toll on players from both sides, with many of them clocking in 45+ minutes on the ice. Hurricanes looked winded at the end of the fourth OT and that is what led to Tkachuk's winner.
After a well deserved break, both teams are back on tonight to clash heads. If Panthers win, they get a comfortable 2-0 series lead. If Canes win, they will equalise the series at 1-1 heading to Florida for Games 3 and 4.
Teuvo Teravainen came back last game after being sidelined due to a hand injury. He had been out since the first round and missed a majority of the Canes postseason run up until now.

Florida Panthers vs Carolina Hurricanes prediction
After one of the best games in NHL postseason history and arguably the best game of the 2022-23 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Hurricanes will be the ones to take Game 2.
They looked very tired at the end fourth OT in Game 1 which led to a lax defense which resulted in Matthew Tkachuk's game-winner. That will not be the case tonight as they will come in with a very heavy offense right out of the gate.
