The Edmonton Oilers walked into TD Garden on Tuesday night and shut out the Boston Bruins 4-0. The Oilers won their fourth in a row on the strength of Stuart Skinner’s 26 saves.
Adam Henrique scored twice for the Edmonton Oilers, with captain Connor McDavid (PPG) and Viktor Arvidsson (EN) getting the other tallies for Edmonton. Jeremy Swayman made 35 saves for the Bruins.
Here's a closer look at three reasons why Edmonton shut out Boston on Tuesday night.
3 reasons why Edmonton Oilers shut out Boston Bruins 4-0
#3. Effective special teams
The Edmonton Oilers got a huge boost from their special teams against the Boston Bruins. First, their power play went 1-for-3 on the night, with Connor McDavid scoring with the man advantage to make it 2-0 in the second period.
Then, the Oilers’ penalty kill was perfect, going 2-for-2 on the night. The Bruins weren’t able to get much going with the man advantage, as the Oilers handled the shorthanded situations very well.
Overall, the special teams did their job in helping the Oilers cruise to the win against the Bruins.
#2. Henrique scores twice
Depth scoring has been an issue for the Oilers this season. But on Tuesday night, the bottom six came through in a big way. Third-line center Adam Henrique scored twice, including what would be the game-winner at 6:33 of the first period.
Henrique struck again in the second, notching his fifth of the season, getting assists from Zach Hyman and Jeff Skinner.
It’s also worth pointing out that Brett Kulak registered two assists on the night, one on Henrique’s first goal and the other on Viktor Arvidsson’s empty-netter.
#1. Stuart Skinner earns the shutout
Stuart Skinner earned his second clean sheet of the season, making 26 saves on the night. It’s worth mentioning that the Bruins didn’t generate many high-danger chances. As a result, Skinner was able to turn the Bruins away without having to face rebounds or secondary chances in close.
Also, the Edmonton Oilers' defense deserves credit for keeping the Bruins’ top players in check. For instance, David Pastrnak registered just one shot on goal in nearly 20 minutes of ice time. That strong defensive effort made the difference for the Oilers on Tuesday night.
The Oilers will continue their road trip on Thursday night as they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena. The Oilers will be looking to make it five wins in a row and continue climbing the Pacific Division standings.
