
Auston Matthews is an American ice hockey center and alternate captain for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on September 17, 1997, he was selected by the Maple Leafs as the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Matthews became the second player to achieve the 40-goal milestone in his rookie season after Alex Ovechkin in the 2004-05 season. Due to this milestone, Matthews won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's top rookie. He continued to excel in the following seasons and in the 2020-21 season, he won the Rocket Richard Trophy for being the league's leading goal-scorer with 41 goals in just 52 games. The following season, Matthews set another record of becoming the first American-born player to score the most goals in a single NHL season. He contributed 60 goals which became his career-high score in the NHL and won the Rocket Richard Trophy for the second consecutive season.
Throughout his career, Matthews has received many honors, including earning a spot on the NHL All-Star Game seven times. He won the Ted Lindsay Award as the most outstanding player voted by teammates and the Hart Memorial Trophy in 2022 as the most valuable player of the league.
