The Edmonton Oilers edged the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 at the United Center on Saturday night. With the win, the Oilers returned to the win column after losing their last outing to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Oilers came back from a 3-1 deficit, completing the comeback with Zach Hyman’s 14th of the season at 7:18 of the third period. Corey Perry, Adam Henrique and Vasily Podkilzin scored for the Oilers. Meanwhile, Teuvo Teravainen, Nick Foligno and Ryan Donato got the tallies for the Blackhawks.
So, here’s a look at three main reasons why the Edmonton Oilers edged the Chicago Blackhawks:
Three reasons why the Edmonton Oilers beat the Chicago Blackhawks
#3 Depth scoring led the way
In a rare game where Connor McDavid went pointless, the Edmonton Oilers’ depth scoring picked up the slack. While Leon Draisaitl had two assists, Vasily Podkolzin earned the game’s first star, notching up two points of his own (1G, 1A).
Moreover, Adam Henrique and Corey Perry got the other tallies for the Oilers, picking up the offense in light of McDavid’s struggles. The depth scoring is a huge boost for the Oilers as they look to continue building momentum in the second half of the season.
#2 Impressive comeback
The Edmonton Oilers showcased their resilience by coming back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits. The Oilers were down 2-0 after 20 minutes. After Podkolzin had made the game 2-1, Ryan Donato notched up his 13th of the season, making it 3-1.
However, that’s when the Oilers turned up the juice. Adam Henrique and Corey Perry scored two minutes apart to tie the game heading into the second intermission. Zach Hyman eventually got the game-winner to complete the comeback at 7:18 of the third period.
The Oilers would hang on the rest of the way, giving them a much-deserved 4-3 win.
#1 Hyman’s PP game-winner
Zach Hyman got back on the board, notching up his 14th of the season. The power play was crucial in giving the Oilers the lead after tying the game late in the second period.
The goal was a very Hyman-esque tally, as he buried a loose puck in front of the net, leaving three Chicago players scrambling to find the puck. Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard got the assists.
The Oilers will get a chance to relax for a bit on Sunday before taking on the LA Kings on Monday night in a Pacific Division showdown between second and third-place teams. A win will allow the Oilers to cement their hold on second while continuing to close the gap on leaders Vegas Golden Knights.
