NHL legend Wayne Gretzky's eldest daughter, Paulina Gretzky, opened up about how she dealt with the backlash following her husband Dustin Johnson's departure from the PGA Tour in June 2022. Johnson, a U.S. Open and Masters champion, joined the Saudi-funded LIV Golf, a rival golf organization.
According to golf journalist Dan Rapaport, the switch earned the 40-year-old former world Johnson No. 1 a staggering $150 million.
Paulina Gretzky and her husband Dustin Johnson featured in the second season of the Netflix documentary series "Full Swing," which dropped in March 2024. The celebrity couple appeared in the second episode "The Game Has Changed Part 2.
Paulina revealed that after Johnson's move, she faced aggressive and unexpected comments on social media, including death threats against her family. Recounting her ordeal, she said:
“People sending death threats and awful, awful, awful things.”
But despite facing scathing criticism, the 36-year-old celebutante said she and her husband feel happier now. She attributed this to the lighter and more relaxed schedule of LIV Golf, which is a welcome change from the demanding PGA Tour.
“We have a little bit more time together now since things have changed a little, whereas before, it was like, go go go," Paulina said.
Paulina, a mother of two, further elaborated on how the move changed their level of control as a couple.
“We have more control now of how we do things," she said. "That old life that we had, I had to take a backseat, but now it feels like we’re in the front of the plane together flying. It was the right move.”
The couple met in 2009 but didn't officially start dating each other until 2013. In a 2022 Q&A session on Instagram, Paulina revealed that she sought her father Wayne Gretzky, AKA "The Great One's'' approval before accepting Dustin's marriage proposal.
The couple got engaged in 2013 and started a family together. They welcomed their first child in 2015 and another in 2017, before getting married in April 2022.
