Renowned for his butterfly style, Markstrom was drafted 31st overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2008 NHL Draft. He started his junior career at IK Sätra J18 in Sweden and gained recognition with Brynas IF, leading the league in save percentage and goals-against average in 2009–10. He began his NHL career with the Florida Panthers in 2011, playing his first game (loss vs. Devils) on January 23.
