Jake Guentzel is a professional ice hockey player for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL. He began his journey with the Pittsburgh Penguins after being selected in the third round, 77th overall, of the 2013 NHL Draft. Following three seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Penguins on May 23, 2016. Guentzel swiftly made his mark in the NHL, debuting on November 21, 2016, with a memorable performance against the New York Rangers, scoring two goals, including one on his first shot and first shift.

During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he emerged as a key contributor, leading all scorers with 13 goals and tying the rookie playoff points record with 21 points across 25 games. His standout moment came when he became only the second rookie in NHL history to register a hat trick and score an overtime goal in the same playoff game during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Guentzel's winning goals in Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Nashville Predators helped secure the Penguins' status as the first repeat champions in 19 years. However, Guentzel's time with the Penguins ended on March 7, 2024, when he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes along with Ty Smith. In exchange, the Penguins acquired Michael Bunting, Vasily Ponomarev, Ville Koivunen, and Cruz Lucius, a conditional first-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, and a conditional fifth-round pick in the same draft. On June 30, 2024, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
