The Dallas Stars took care of an incredibly important matter of business earlier on Thursday, as they locked up starting goaltender Jake Oettinger to an eight-year, $66 million contract.
Oettinger is set to earn an AAV of $8.25 million over the life of the contract, which is identical to the deal recently signed by Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman. They're both now tied for the fifth-highest AAV in the NHL among goaltenders behind those of Carey Price, Sergei Bobrovsky, Andrei Vasilevskiy and Connor Hellebuyck.
Oettinger is already 3-0 this season with a sparkling 1.63 goals-against average, a .948 save percentage, and one shutout. He also has a career record of 116-48-23 with a .914 save percentage, a 2.49 goals-against average and 11 shutouts.
General Manager Jim Nill said Oettinger is one of the top players in the NHL at his position and has also established himself as a positive pillar of the community.
"Jake has established himself as one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL,” Nill said via NHL.com. “His unique blend of poise, size, athleticism, and mental toughness has helped our team reach new heights since he’s taken over the net. He is an integral part of our core that will allow us to contend for the Stanley Cup this season, but also for many years to come.
"Off the ice, Jake is a leader in our team’s community efforts and is always willing to give his time and resources. I’m pleased that Jake and his wife Kennedi will be part of our family for many years to come," he added.
It's been a busy month for NHL GMs, as goaltenders Joey Daccord of the Seattle Kraken (five years, $25 million) and Linus Ullmark of the Ottawa Senators (four years, $33 million) were also recently signed to new contracts.
How exactly does Oettinger's deal break down?
Length and signing bonus of Oettinger's new deal
Oettinger's deal is for eight years and will officially begin at the start of the 2025-26 season. It will expire at the end of the 2032-33 season and Oettinger will be 34 when he's up for a new contract.
Here's a closer look at the breakdown of Oettinger's deal:
In addition to his $8.25 million AAV, Oettinger's new contract includes $23 million in signing bonuses.
Jake Oettinger's new extension includes no-trade clause
According to Blackout Dallas' Brian Sweet, Oettinger's contract includes a no-trade clause, but with stipulations.
"From years 2-6, he has a no-movement clause, which is standard at the beginning of some contracts," Sweet wrote. "When it gets to year 7, he has a limited no-movement trade list that the Stars can trade him to. However, when he gets to the final year of his deal, they can't trade him. Basically, it's a copy of the Jeremy Swayman deal but with one additional no-move year."
The Stars fell 3-2 against Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Thursday.
