James van Riemsdyk is an American professional ice hockey left winger playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL. Born on May 4, 1989, in Middletown, New Jersey, he began his hockey journey at a young age, honing his skills with local clubs. The Philadelphia Flyers selected him in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Van Riemsdyk played with them until 2012, registering 11 goals and 13 assists, including one goal and one assist during the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs. After his successful stint with the Flyers, he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs where he had many successful seasons. In 2024, he played his 100th NHL game with the Boston Bruins. In 2024, he signed a one-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

During his freshman season, van Riemsdyk finished third in the team with 34 points, 11 goals and 23 assists, in 31 games. His strong performance earned him two Hockey East Rookie of the Month awards in January and March, along with a selection to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. In the following season, he scored 17 goals and 23 assists. After two years, he decided to join the NHL in 2009.

Van Riemsdyk began playing ice hockey at five, practicing at a rink in Old Bridge, New Jersey. He attended Christian Brothers Academy. Following high school, he joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
