Prior to his NHL entry, John played a season with the Indiana Ice in the United States Hockey League. John's hockey journey started with the Hershey Bears, the affiliated team of the Washington Capitals in the American Hockey League. He debuted with the Bears during the Calder Cup playoffs and within his debut, he earned his first professional goal.
John scaled during that season, played 16 games, contributed substantial scores to the Bears, and helped them win the 2009 Calder Cup Championship.
