John Carlson is an American ice hockey player who plays as a defenseman for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League. Born on January 10, 1990, John is 6 feet 3 inches tall and was selected by the Washington Capitals as the 27th overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry draft.

Prior to his NHL entry, John played a season with the Indiana Ice in the United States Hockey League. John's hockey journey started with the Hershey Bears, the affiliated team of the Washington Capitals in the American Hockey League. He debuted with the Bears during the Calder Cup playoffs and within his debut, he earned his first professional goal.

John scaled during that season, played 16 games, contributed substantial scores to the Bears, and helped them win the 2009 Calder Cup Championship. The first NHL game he played was on November 21, 2009, against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he scored his first NHL goal against the Carolina Hurricanes on March 25, 2010.

In 2010, during the Stanley Cup, John scored his first NHL playoff goal in the 2 game series against the Montreal Capitals. After that series, he rejoined the Bears in the NHL and helped the team win the Calder Cup against the Texas Stars.

During the 2015-16 season, John managed to play 56 games out of 82. However, he collected an impressive score of 39 points by the season's end. The following season, 2017-18, was John's best season of his career; he collected 68 points in 82 games and achieved the Stanley Cup.
