Sarah was an all-state volleyball player in high school and later earned a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh, where she played for four years and served as team captain. After completing college, Sarah became a volleyball coach at Oak Creek High School and later at the University of Dayton. She also worked as the Director of Volleyball Operations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The couple met in Wisconsin while Sarah was coaching and John was an assistant coach with the Badgers.
