Drafted third overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Cooley has emerged as a promising young talent. He developed his skills in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, where he shone in the 2021-22 season with 75 points in 51 games for the U18 team.

Before joining the NHL, he made an impact at the University of Minnesota. Although a Pittsburgh native, Cooley grew up a Washington Capitals and Alexander Ovechkin fan. He initially took up hockey through Sidney Crosby's Little Penguins program. With his high draft selection, Cooley became the highest-drafted player from the Pittsburgh area, surpassing previous picks like J.T. Miller and R.J. Umberger.
