Founded in 1967 as part of the NHL's expansion, the Kings compete in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. They play their home games at Crypto.com Arena in Downtown Los Angeles, a venue they’ve called home since 1999.

Over the years, the Kings have won two Stanley Cups, in 2012 and 2014. Some of the franchise's most notable players include Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Luc Robitaille, and defenseman Rob Blake. They are led by Captain Anze Kopitar, with the Ontario Reign serving as their AHL affiliate.

As of 2025, Jim Hiller is the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings, as per the official website of the NHL. He was named the 30th head coach in franchise history on May 22, 2024, after serving as interim head coach starting February 2, 2024. Hiller had previously been an assistant coach with the Kings since 2022. He also held assistant roles with the New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Detroit Red Wings.

In junior hockey, he coached in the WHL and BCHL for 12 seasons. He led Tri-City to two division titles and five playoff appearances and won CHL and WHL Coach of the Year in 2011–12. Hiller played in 63 NHL games, including 40 with the Kings. He was drafted by LA in 1989, 10th round, 207th overall.

Anže Kopitar is the captain of the Los Angeles Kings and the first Slovenian player to reach the NHL, as per the official website of the NHL. Drafted by the Kings in the first round (11th overall) of the 2005 NHL Draft, Kopitar made his NHL debut in 2006. He has been a pivotal player for the Kings, helping lead the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014. Kopitar has won the Selke Trophy twice as the league's best defensive forward (2016, 2018). He was named Kings' captain in 2016 and has been selected to multiple NHL All-Star Games.

The Los Angeles Kings have had many head coaches since joining the NHL in 1967. Red Kelly was the first (1967–1969), followed by short terms from Hal Laycoe and Johnny Wilson. Larry Regan and Fred Glover led briefly before Bob Pulford's longer term (1972–1977). In the 1990s, Larry Robinson coached the team from 1995 to 1999 after Barry Melrose and Tom Webster.

Andy Murray led from 1999 to 2006, followed by John Torchetti and Marc Crawford. Terry Murray (2008–2011) was succeeded by John Stevens and then Darryl Sutter, who coached from 2011 to 2017 and won two Stanley Cups.
