Auston Matthews confident in Maple Leafs despite postseason struggles in recent years
Over the past eight years, the Maple Leafs have made it out of the first round just once. On the heels of a first-round exit at the hands of the Boston Bruins last season, the team decided to switch things up, giving the captaincy to Auston Matthews.
While the team got off to a slow start in their first game of the year, through their first two games, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander have all been held scoreless.
Despite that, the newly-minted captain is confident that the team will be able to find the success they've been after.
“I’m excited about our group, I really like our group a lot. I think over the course of the season, it’s natural you’re going to go through some ups and downs," Matthews told Eliotte Friedman. "There’s adversity, but, I think our group as a whole I’m extremely confident in, despite the lack of postseason success over the years.”
“Sometimes you have to take your licks and just continue to push on, and put your best foot forward. I think we feel confident that we will break through at some point. It just takes one postseason, right? I think for us, just continue to put the work in and stay in the moment. We can only control, what we can control today”.
With the team eager to pursue a Stanley Cup, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
