Dumba played junior hockey with the Red Deer Rebels and briefly for the Portland Winterhawks in the Western Hockey League (WHL).

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Dumba started skating at three and later moved with his family to Calgary, Alberta, where he played minor hockey with the Crowchild Minor Hockey Association. Dumba also attended the Edge School for Athletes, playing in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League during the 2009–10 season.
