Mathew Dumba is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman for the Dallas Stars in the NHL as of 2024. Born on July 25, 1994, in Regina, Saskatchewan, he was selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Wild in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Dumba played 10 seasons with the Wild and has also played for the Arizona Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Dumba is of Filipino, Romanian, and German descent, and grew up in Calgary, Alberta, where he honed his skills with the Crowchild Minor Hockey Association. He made his mark in junior hockey with the Red Deer Rebels and briefly the Portland Winterhawks in the WHL, earning accolades such as the WHL Rookie of the Year.

Charles Dumba is of Romanian and German descent, and moved the family from Regina, Saskatchewan, to Calgary, Alberta, due to work commitments. Treena Dumba who is of Filipino heritage, has been a strong advocate for her son, especially during incidents of racism he encountered in youth hockey.

“My mom has always been my biggest defender. Her strength taught me how to stand tall in tough times" Dumba told NHL.com.

“My parents taught me to be proud of who I am and where I come from. That pride drives me in everything I do,” Dumba added.

Dumba's grandparents, Robert and Edna Hanson, were remarkable figures in his life. Edna in particular, left a lasting impression with her legacy of love and inclusion. She and Robert adopted seven children from diverse backgrounds, including Treena Dumba. In addition to running a foster home, Edna operated a receiving home for children in crisis.

“My grandmother had the biggest heart. She helped so many people and didn’t care where they came from. That’s a lesson I carry with me every day,” Mathew Dumba shared in an interview with NHL.com.

Mathew’s younger brother is Kyle Dumba. He was born on March 3, 1998, in Calgary, Alberta, and is a former goaltender known for his stints in junior hockey leagues across Canada. Kyle played for teams in the WHL, AJHL, and BCHL.

Kyle Dumba began his career with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the 2013–14 season. He balanced his time between the WHL and the Okotoks Oilers in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) the same season. Over the years, he played for multiple teams in the WHL, including the Kamloops Blazers, Everett Silvertips, and Regina Pats. He played 42 games during his time in the WHL as per Hockeydb.com.

Kyle is also an artist who specializes in custom-painting sneakers and skates. Together, the Dumba brothers worked on the Rebuild Minnesota initiative following the protests in Minneapolis. They designed unique Air Jordans and hockey skates to raise funds for businesses owned by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) as per NHL.com.
