The Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center. The Maple Leafs won a gritty road contest despite the lopsided 32-17 shot count in the Flyers’ favor.

John Tavares (PPG), Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies got the tallies for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Meanwhile, Travis Konecny scored twice for the Philadelphia Flyers in the losing effort.

Here’s a closer look at three reasons why Toronto pulled out a 3-2 win over Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

3 reasons why Toronto Maple Leafs won 3-2 over Philadelphia Flyers

#3. Special teams success

First, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ penalty kill was perfect on the night, going 4-for-4. The penalty kill was fantastic, particularly in the dying minutes of the third period when Matthew Knies took a hooking call to set up the Flyers with a 6-on-4 power play.

But the Leafs’ penalty kill, specifically goaltender Joseph Woll, did a remarkable job in stopping the Flyers from scoring. The Leafs managed to lock the game down and skate away with two huge points to pad their lead atop the Atlantic Division.

#2. Auston Matthews continues hot streak

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews continued his hot streak, notching two points on the night (1G, 1A) after returning from injury. Matthews has seven points (2G, 5A) in his last three games.

Matthews appears to be fully healthy again as he dominated on the ice. In particular, his tying goal was crucial as it came roughly 40 seconds after the Flyers scored to make it 2-1 in the second period.

Tuesday night’s performance bodes well for Matthews who’s now up to 28 points in 26 games so far this season.

#1. Joseph Woll was fantastic

Joseph Woll was the story of the night for the Maple Leafs. Woll made 32 saves, effectively stealing the game for the Maple Leafs.

He was solid down the stretch, stymying the Flyers as they made a late push to tie the game. While the Leafs’ defense deserves credit for playing well in front of Woll, it was Woll who made several crucial saves in the final shorthanded sequence in the game’s final minute.

With Anthony Stolarz on IR, Woll has stepped up tremendously to keep the Leafs afloat during the last month or so.

The Leafs will get a day off on Wednesday before taking on the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday at PNC Arena in a clash of Eastern Conference heavyweights.
