The New York Islanders are an American professional ice hockey team based in Brooklyn, New York, and compete in the NHL's Eastern Conference. Founded in 1972, the team originally played in Uniondale, Long Island, for 42 seasons. After a rough start, the Islanders found their form under head coach Al Arbour and made their first playoff appearance in 1974-75. By the late 1970s, they won their first division title and posted the best regular-season record in the NHL in 1978-79.

In the 1980s, the Islanders became dominant, advancing to five consecutive Stanley Cup finals and winning four straight championships from 1980 to 1983. During this golden era, key players like Billy Smith, Mike Bossy, and Bryan Trottier led the team. Despite their success, they lost in the 1983-84 finals.

The 1990s were a challenging period for the Islanders, with the team often finishing last in their division. They returned to the playoffs in the early 2000s but failed to progress beyond the first round. However, the team saw a resurgence in the late 2010s, reaching the conference finals twice in 2019 and 2020, though the Tampa Bay Lightning ultimately defeated them on both occasions.
