The New York Rangers is one of the NHL's oldest teams founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. Originally named 'Tex’s Rangers' by the New York press, the team has been a fixture at Madison Square Garden since its opening in 1968. As part of the 'Original Six', the Rangers were foundational to the NHL before its expansion in 1967.

The Rangers claimed their first Stanley Cup in 1928, becoming the first U.S.-based team to win the NHL’s top prize. They added three more championships in 1933, 1940, and 1994, with the latter victory coming after a long 54-year drought. The team saw early success with stars like Frank Boucher under the guidance of coach Lester Patrick but faced struggles in the 1940s to 1960s, including a record-setting seven-year postseason drought in the late 1990s. The Rangers were revitalized in the early 2000s and made several deep playoff runs. They reached the Stanley Cup finals in 2014 and the Eastern Conference finals in 2015. Despite their competitive spirit and numerous high-profile acquisitions, such as Wayne Gretzky, the team has experienced ups and downs, including a challenging 2017–18 season.
