The Pittsburgh Penguins fell back to the .500 mark after they were soundly defeated on home ice by the visiting Carolina Hurricanes at PPG Paints Arena on Friday; the final score was 4-1.
While the two teams were tied at 1-1 after the opening 20 minutes of play, the Hurricanes were boosted by a pair of second-period goals from Martin Necas and Shayne Gostisbehere; both tallies were scored while on the man advantage.
The Hurricanes added the fourth and final goal of the game in the third period courtesy of Jack Roslovic.
It was a relatively easy night for Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen, who faced only 11 combined shots from the Penguins during the first two periods of play. While they eventually fired 15 shots during the game's final frame, they couldn't get anything else past him.
And to say that Penguins fans were frustrated with their club's lack of offensive output during the game would be an understatement, as many took to social media to voice their disdain for what they were watching.
"10 shots, 2 periods in. Brutal," wrote @cbaibos."
"Well you should have worn out the entire Carolina team on power plays. Try spending time SHOOTING THE PUCK!" exclaimed @godsangel1959.
"Sullivan needs to be fired now. He doesn't know how to coach defense. This team lacks speed and intensity. As expected they will be in last place before to long," opined @Michael34269478.
"They just embarrassed themselves in front of their fans with the worse performance this year. Not sure if they were told that they can’t win this game because i can’t even find one that’s trying," added @Andy_n_di.
"Playing a talented team like Carolina just shows how slow and overmatched the Pens are. Going to be a long season!" opined @chugg2.
"If I was at that game I would walk out. This team is a loser. They have NOTHING!" exclaimed @godsangel1959.
The Penguins are now 3-3 through six games
The Penguins enjoyed a historic night at PPG Paints Arena earlier in the week against the Buffalo Sabres that featured Sidney Crosby's 1,600th career point along with Evgeni Malkin's 500th career goal. However, they were unable to replicate any of that positivity against the Hurricanes on Friday.
Pittsburgh's first two games were near opposites of one another, as they were bested by the New York Rangers on home ice by a 6-0 score, only to follow that up with a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on the road 24 hours later.
After dropping their next game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Penguins doubled up the Montreal Canadiens by a 6-3 final score and followed that up with the aforementioned win over the Sabres, a 6-5 triumph in OT.
The Penguins will now travel to Manitoba to face the Winnipeg Jets at Canada Life Centre on Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 3:00 PM EST.
