New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox expressed frustration after a 5-3 loss to the Florida Panthers on Monday. Despite improved special teams play, Fox felt the Rangers couldn’t convert their efforts into a win.
Fox, who is under a seven-year, $66.5 million contract, emphasized that the team needs to start winning. The Rangers have lost four straight games and seven of their last nine.
"I feel like we came out of this break looking to use it as a reset. Last game was really special teams that killed us. Special teams were obviously much better today. It kind of feels like we’re repeating the same stuff at this point. At some point, it’s got to be wins," Fox said.
"It’s not just, ‘Yeah, did better five-on-five.’ It’s got to be wins. It’s extremely frustrating. If we keep playing games like that, we will get wins. I think that’s really all it is," he added.
The Rangers had chances to win but fell short. They were down 2-0 but tied the game 3-3. However, Jesper Boqvist of the Panthers scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with just over eight minutes left. Aleksander Barkov added an empty-net goal to seal the win.
Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky made 33 saves to help end the Panthers' two-game losing streak. Other Panthers' goal scorers were Eetu Luostarinen, Mackie Samoskevich, and Uvis Balinskis.
Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette frustrated with team's performance
After the game Rangers coach Peter Laviolette expressed frustration with his team's performance. He said they did enough to win but also enough to lose. Laviolette noted that despite doing more good than bad, it didn’t reflect on the scoreboard.
“We did enough to win the game, we did enough to lose the game,” Laviolette said (via NHL.Com). “It is frustrating because you feel like you’re doing more good than you are bad out there. At the end of the day, it’s not showing on the scoreboard. That’s the business, it’s winning. It’s not good enough.”
Laviolette also spoke about Filip Chytil's absence during a key moment. He explained that Chytil was set to play on the second unit but missed his chance due to a missed change. Chytil had played 9:17 after returning from injury.
“....He was supposed to be going out on the second unit and just never got the change with the person he was changing for,” Laviolette said.
On January 2, 2025, the New York will play the Boston Bruins. The game is set to start at 7:00 PM EST.
