Washington Capitals netminder Logan Thompson has signed a six-year contract extension worth $35.1 million with the team, NHL.com confirms.

Thompson joined the Capitals after playing for the Vegas Golden Knights. His 22-2-3 record, 2.09 GAA and .925 SV percent earned him a massive contract extension.

The news has been met with plenty of enthusiasm from fans. Here’s a look at what fans had to say about this significant development for Logan Thompson and the Washington Capitals:

“Absolute steal,” one fan opined.
“Hell of a year for him thus far,” this fan commented.
“Great deal for a great goalie,” another fan remarked.

Some fans remained skeptical despite the consensus that this deal was good for the Washington Capitals and Logan Thompson.

Let’s take a look at what these fans commented about the deal on social media:

“Holy overpay,” a fan chimed in.
“I was hoping he’d get locked up for cheaper like 4.5m,” this fan weighed in.
“Feels like a great deal, goalies are volatile though,” another fan posted on social media.

With Thompson locked up in what appears to be a team-friendly deal, the Washington Capitals can now focus on the trade deadline. The club will look to add depth to complement Alex Ovechkin in what seems to be another strong playoff run this season.

The Washington Capitals officially announced the Thompson contract extension on Monday morning, with GM Chris Patrick having nothing but kind words regarding the 27-year-old netminder.

"We are pleased to sign Logan to a multi-year contract," Patrick stated per NHL.com. "Logan has demonstrated that he is one of the top goaltenders in the NHL this season and since he joined the League.”

The praise is justified given the type of year Thompson has had. He has solidified the crease in Washington following the departure of Darcy Kuemper in the offseason. Patrick went on to praise Thompson’s physical skills and abilities, stating:

“With his size and exceptional athleticism, we are confident that this signing will enhance one of the most critical positions on our team, especially as he enters the prime years of his career."

The Caps have indeed locked up Thompson through his prime years. He will be 33 years old when his new contract expires. While he could still be a tremendous goalie at that time, the Capitals are banking on Thompson playing his best hockey in the next six seasons.

Washington will need Thompson to be at his best as Ovechkin reaches the twilight of his career. By then, the Caps’s competitive window could be dwindling.
