Alex Ovechkin: Capitals captain to miss game against Hurricanes due to family emergency

Alex Ovechkin will the next game due to a family emergency.

Alex Ovechkin will be out of the Washington Capitals lineup tonight at the Capital One Arena against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Washington Capitals' GM Brian MacLellan made the announcement via their social media handles, announcing that Ovechkin would miss tonight's game against the Hurricanes due to a close family member's health-related concern.

In response to the same post, the Carolina Hurricanes showed class and sent their best wishes to Ovi and his family.

Joe Snively, a 27-year-old forward for the Hershey Bears, was summoned up to replace Ovechkin. Snively was waived from the Capitals earlier in January.

The 27-year-old forward has scored only one point in six games played for the Capitals so far this season. In his NHL career, he has played 18 games and has eight points on four goals and four assists.

The Caps will miss the presence of Alex Ovechkin in tonight's encounter

The Carolina Hurricanes are presently dominating the Metropolitan Division with 73 points and playing very good hockey.

The most recent setback for the Hurricanes came on Saturday against the New York Rangers, and they have only lost two of their past 10 games. The Capitals, on the other hand, have won five of their past 10 games, with their most recent loss coming on Sunday against the San Jose Sharks.

Alex Ovechkin has been exceptional for the Capitals this season. The "Great Eight" is also leading the squad in scoring with 54 points (32 goals and 22 assists) through 54 games this season.

Alex Ovechkin not only provides leadership within the squad, but he is also one of the most experienced players in the league, capable of changing the course of the game at any time.

Washington Capitals performances this season so far

The Washington Capitals have a 28-21-6 record after 55 games this season. They are presently fourth in the Metropolitan Division with 62 points. They are one point ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Wild Card race and have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs.

On Feb. 14, the Washington Capitals will host the Carolina Hurricanes at Capital Arena. The puck will be released at 7 p.m. ET.
