Alex Ovechkin now holds the record for the most 40-goal seasons in NHL history, with 13. Ovi accomplished this feat during the Washington Capitals' game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Wayne Gretzky previously shared the record with Ovechkin with 40 or more goals in 12 seasons.

Alex Ovechkin was also honored on Tuesday for surpassing Gordie Howe to become the second-highest goal scorer in NHL history after Wayne Gretzky. All Capitals players donned #8 on their backs during the warmups to celebrate the remarkable achievement of "The Great Eight."

Ovi has been a top contributor for the Capitals in terms of goal scoring this season. He has played in 66 games and has managed to accumulated 69 points, totalling (40 goals and 29 assists).

In 2001, Ovechkin began his professional hockey career with the Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Super League (RSL). He was selected first overall by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut in 2005.

In his first NHL game, Ovechkin scored two goals to lead the Capitals to a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ovi has donned the Capitals jersey for his entire career. The 17-year NHL veteran has won nine Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophies, three Hart Memorial Trophies, one Art Ross Trophy and one Stanley Cup.
