The Boston Bruins resolved their contract dispute with goalie Jeremy Swayman, as he signed an eight-year deal worth $8.25 million on Sunday. Swayman had previously played on a $3.475 million contract reached through arbitration. Both sides avoided another arbitration this summer after disagreements about his contract offer. Swayman even missed training camp due to the conflict.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported the news:

"Swayman and Boston: 8 x $8.25M followed by $23M bonuses, with a no-trade clause."

The Bruins announced the Swayman signing on X as well:

NHL fans reacted to the extension finally taking place.

"All that drama for 8.25M?" a fan responded.
"Better not whine all season about the process." another fan said.
"He better stand on his head and be the second coming of Patrick Roy for that price tag. Welcome back Swayman." a fan wrote.

Here are some more reactions from fans on X to Jeremy Swayman's signing:

"So 64million reasons wasn’t enough, but 66 is. Hmmm Anyway" a fan said, referencing Bruins GM, Don Sweeney's statement.
"Good for him but anything less than .920 and 2.40GAA may be a tough look" a fan said.
"Well, I enjoyed my short time cheering FOR Swayman. Another player falling short of their value Bettmans NHL," a fan wrote.
"These guys are way overpaid. How long before nobody can afford to take their kid to a live nhl game..?" a fan questioned.

Evaluating why Boston Bruins and Jeremy Swayman finally agreed to a contract extension

In the preseason, the Boston Bruins lost five of their seven games. This could have been a clear sign for the Bruins that without Jeremy Swayman, their regular season could be challenging as well.

During the 2023-24 season, Swayman had a .916 save percentage and a 2.53 goals-against average. In the playoffs, he led the Bruins to the second round, posting a .933 save percentage.

This made a strong case for the Bruins to extend Swayman. Even Swayman was confident about signing the contract,

"I'm confident that my agent and I and management will figure out the details this summer," Swayman said, per NHL.com in May, "I'm looking forward to it."

Since Linus Ullmark was traded to the Ottawa Senators, Jeremy Swayman is set to be Boston's top goalie. The team will now need to decide on his backup for the 2024-25 season. Candidates include Joonas Korpisalo and Brandon Bussi.
