Matthew Tkachuk is an American professional ice hockey winger and alternate captain for the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers. His brother Brady is the Senators' captain.
Both Matthew and Brady were in South Florida for the NHL All-Star Weekend. Brady was making his third All-Star appearance, while Matthew, who was in his first season with the Panthers, was making his second.
Matthew, 24, is two years older than Brady.
Because Florida and Ottawa are in the same division, this was their first opportunity to play together. Coach Jim Montgomery had them playing on the same line, with Aleksander Barkov filling the third spot.
The Tkachuk brothers are arguably the most dominant sibling duo in the league. The two play a hard-nosed style similar to that of their father, former NHL star Keith Tkachuk.
Keith played 18 seasons in the NHL with the Jets/Coyotes, Blues, and Thrashers. He was one of only five American-born players to score 500 goals and the sixth to reach 1,000 points. He was a five-time All-Star by the end of his career.
Matthew Tkachuk was selected by Calgary as a forward with the sixth overall pick in the 2016 draft, and he scored 48 points as a rookie. He also accrued over 100 penalty minutes, just like his father. Matthew has proven to be well worth his salary in his first season with the Panthers. In only 49 games, he has 66 points.
Brady Tkachuk, meanwhile, was selected by the Senators with the No. 4 pick in the 2018 draft. He plays a similar style to his father and brother. Brady has only been in the league for five seasons, but he already has a fearsome reputation. He has over 100 penalty minutes in two seasons and 243 points in 327 games.
Matthew Tkachuk was named All-Star MVP in 2023
Matthew Tkachuk was recently named MVP of the Honda NHL All-Star 2023 competition.
He was perhaps at his best in the game between the Atlantic Division and the Central Division at the FLA Live Arena. His team (Atlantic Division) defeated the Central Division 7-5, with Matthew scoring a goal and providing an assist.
What was more intriguing was Matthew Tkachuk's performance in the semi-final against the Metropolitan Division. His team won 10-6, with Tkachuk scoring three goals and adding two assists.
Matthew Tkachuk's five-point performance was praised because it came against a team that included two NHL legends in Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin.
